Time keeps on going, dear friends, and progress walks around the world with hurried technical steps. Every day we hear such words as gigabyte, interface, and many others with a considerable share of futurism. It will take just a little bit more time and cyberpunk that we see on the screen will become our reality. Well, the world changes, and it happens actually all the time, since the date of creation. Considering this fact it is not surprising at all that our beloved anime also undergoes some changes. It's been already five years since the triumph of Final Fantasy, which perhaps, was the first entirely computer created anime. Was it anime? I think, now we already can talk about modern and old anime, or 3D and classical, if you like it better this way. Opinions about 3D films are divided: some people express all kind of disgust and misunderstanding, and as a result rejected 3D production, while others are happy beyond any limit and praise a combination of video technologies. I think, there comes the time to discuss all the pros and cons concerning this new phenomenon in the world of animations.

3D industry takes more and more over, both American anime market, and Japanese as well. Just one look at the box office scores of Dream Works studio or Pixar is enough to realize it is true. Cinema industry started using all kind of imaginable and unimaginable effects long time ago, even combining live actors performance with those created artificially, like, for example, in the film The War of the Worlds. 3D Video is already able to stand on its feet, and we can track how special features of the genre and other unique peculiarities rapidly appear.

3D animations are not like common video as they are developed on the computer alone with 3D graphics software. 3D drawing and animation help the artist to show either thing which is impossible or too expensive to capture in any other way.

So, what is the situation with anime? Certainly, we cannot avoid mentioning the famous series Final Fantasy Spirits Within and Advent Children which created furore and have caused a huge wave of admiration all over the world. Actually, everything started with these two films, even though some people still doubt if 3D was good to express anime ideas and atmosphere. There was no 2-dimensional world common for old style anime, and absolutely different colour style. Usually those people who do not accept 3D innovations in traditional anime just cannot stand 3-dimentional animated world. And it is not that they are absolutely wrong; Final Fantasy Spirits Within, as a matter of fact, is an ordinary film, and a film after all is not anime, we know that for sure. But on the other hand Final Fantasy Advent Children has almost all anime components from a plot to brightly coloured characters, and atmosphere also can be recognized in both parts. It is possible not to love this film, but extremely difficult. And we have to admit that it is anime.

There appear more and more fans of 3D anime. Considering the fact that every second anime fan is at the same time a inveterate gamer, it is obvious how much popular 3D is and going to be in future. Computer hardware becomes more efficient, and games, accordingly, become more beautiful and realistic. 3D is an absolute leader in the game industry, and, describing anime games, nobody pays attention if it is 3D or not. As for anime series it still has to answer this kind of questions. And only when everyone decides what anime is and where is that line not to be crossed, it will be possible to forget all the questions.

Summing it all up, we have to say, that it's been a long time already since new technologies get into anime, almost during its all time-being, sometimes imperceptible and successful, and sometimes just killing the whole film with its worthless additions. But we should fell happy, friends, that we have a chance to observe how something really nice will appear by trying and making mistakes, with the talent of the producer and successful findings of the director. After all art synthesis is a good thing and useful to all of us.
